Unbiased Guide to Do Data Recovery Choice

November 16th, 2008

How to identify data recovery software for your needs.

Data recovery software can be used to recover data that has been lost or files that have been deleted from your computer’s hard disk or a CD or DVD. Since there are several data recovery programs available in the market, you need to select the one that suits you most. This will ofcourse depending on your computer system, whether it is just a personal computer or a large network systems. There are different data recovery softwares in the market that caters to your exact needs. It makes sense to make the right choice as you maybe buying something that you don’t really need.

You find the most suitable data recovery software by using the following guidelines:

One, you should look for a data recovery program that is easy to install. Most users have limited knowledge of computers and may not be able to use a program that requires a complex installation procedure.

Two, the software should be compatible with a range of platforms such as Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 98 and Windows NT. This will allow you to use the program across a number of operating systems.

Three, the data recovery program should come with clear instructions and should be easy to use. Some programs have options that are not easy to find and users waste a lot of time looking for them.

Four, you should ideally look for a program that allows you to recover data across storage media, like hard disks, CDs, DVDs, or thumb drives. The data recovery program should be capable of recovering all of the data or a part of it and you should be able to use it to recover one file or many files, with ease.

Five, the software should support multiple file systems like FAT, FAT32, and NTFS, because different file systems are used by different operating systems.

Six, some data recovery programs are capable of working as background agents that backup critical data selected by users for protection.

Seven, look for data recovery software that offers a high level of support by means of helpdesk, e-mail or phone. Vendors should provide all relevant information about the software on their website.

Eight, there may be a large number of files that can be recovered and it may take a lot of time to search for a particular file manually. A good data recovery program will have search capabilities and will help you to find files you want to recover easily.

Finally, you may find that some data recovery software are able to locate the files that you are looking for, but are not able to restore them to their original file directory. Look for software that will help you do this.

The Ldap Directory Server And It’s Development Explained

November 16th, 2008

As companies have grown, and migrated from just using telephones to email and web based systems, so the comon company directory has needed to change and grow. In the 1980s telecoms companies created the X.500 specification, which is a collection of protocols to build and distribute a directory of information.

X.500 directory services were accessed via the X.500 Directory Access Protocol (DAP) which used the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) protocol stack. As companies [spi]began|started[/spin] to use TCP/IP networks, many found the complexity of managing a large OSI/DAP infrastructure too much. The Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) was created to access X.500 directory servers via TCP/IP.

An LDAP server uses the concept of an organisational hierarchy to arrange information, which can include usernames, telephone numbers, office locations, photos, and more. This directory structure can be based on an organisation’s structure, making LDAP directories a natural fit for replacing an organisation’s phonebook. The initial X.500 specification was deliberately designed with this scalable organisation of information in mind, which is one of the main factors behind the success of LDAP.

With the development of Voice Over IP (VOIP) technologies an entire organisation’s information can be held within LDAP, allowing access from email clients, instant messaging applications, and HR systems. Even solutions such as Microsoft’s Active Directory utilise LDAP and X.500 directory structures. LDAP’s flexibility makes it an part of any modern infrastructure.

Understand Your Unix – What Is Sun Solaris?

November 15th, 2008

Back in 1987, AT&T and Sun said that the two companies were working together to release a new variant of UNIX, combining the two most commonly used versions at the time – BSD and System V. This new UNIX variant would be named UNIX System V Release 4 – SVR4.

In 1991, Sun said that they were replacing their existing UNIX OS, SunOS, with a new variant based on SVR4. SunOS was based on BSD and Sun were beginning to encounter problems with that release, and so with an eye to the future Sun unveiled Solaris 2.

SunOS was then renamed Solaris 1, and each Solaris variant was made up of the operating environment (Solaris 2.6, Solaris 7, Solaris 10) and it’s related kernel (SunOS 5.6, SunOS 5.7, SunOS 10). The reason for this strange marketing was that Solaris would mean the complete operating environment, which included the window manager and other products.

Solaris now uses a common codebase for both SPARC and x86 releases. Previous releases had officially been ported by Sun to the PowerPC and Itanium processors. Solaris is now one of the most common UNIX versions, thanks to it’s power, scalability, and many new technologies Sun include with each release.

With the announcement of OpenSolaris, Sun have finalised the task of open sourcing a powerful high end UNIX, allowing even the smallest Solaris consultancy to build a cost effective UNIX infrastructure.

Files, Photos & Data Backed up Right

November 15th, 2008

We all know we have to backup our computers, but those backups files can get huge. Add that to your existing files and your computers disk will seem to have shrunk overnight. No matter what size hard drive you have, space is a premium. Besides, it’s not exactly a good idea to store your backups on the same disk since you can’t retrieve it when the disk fails.  So what are your options?

The quickest and easiest to understand option is to buy an external hard disk. You can often get a removable drive that is large enough to do the job.  But if you travel you have to take your backup with you.  And where is it when your notebook get’s stolen? You guessed it… In the case with your stolen laptop.  And, they are still hard disks and at some point they will fail. You may find the backup fails before your notebook does.

Internet Attached Storage  is actually a good idea because dedicated hardware is in the same place as your computer.  Have a fire?  flood?  theft? At the worst time, it’s destroyed. And when that happens, a Cloud Backup online will always have a copy in a place for you. This is why businesses usually have one backup in the premises and one (or more) off premises. The best thing about Internet Attached Storage is that it’s available anywhere the Internet is. This gives you the convenience of having a backup available both locally (via Cloud Backup’s “mounted volume” option), and is stored remotely.  So when bad things happen to your computers, you can still get your data. Cloud Backup is automatic, inexpensive, secure, and lets you recover your files, photos, and data easily.

Network attached storage can make sense if you have several computers. They allow you to not only backup several computers’ data into one location but also ability to share or retrieve files from that central area. But adding dedicated hardware can box you in a corner, financially and technically. And if fire, flood or theft happens… It’s all for naught.Besides, CloudBackup lets you backup a whole office full of computers, or just your home PC with one account.

DVD and CD media can be an inexpensive but higher risk solution. But backing up to disks every day is a easily forgotton and thankless chore. It becomes even more hard work when you have a lot of files and your backup spans several disks. The other problem with this method is, backup utilities that come with your computer usually cannot backup to a CD or DVD drive. So you’ll have to fork out extra money to buy a third party backup software that will. And then you have to worry about where to keep piles of these CD/DVD’s where they won’t be scratched, exposed to high temperatures, or suffer the risk of fire, flood, and theft.

No backup solution is one hundred percent and what you choose of course will depend on how you work. If your data is really important to you, use Internet Attached Storage like OPENRSM CloudBackup.  That way your data is always available, secure, and you don’t have to worry.  CloudBackup has you covered.

How To Prevent Data Loss When Your Computer Won’t Boot.

November 14th, 2008

One very common cause of lost data amongst computer users from all walks of life; being they home computer users, business users or even IT support technicians, is that which occurs following an issue with the machine that prevents it from booting. Data loss is often a side affect of attempts to get the machine working again.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and if you have ever experienced a data loss in the past you will at least have at the very least a modicum of experience to guide you. But that said there are many signs of impending system failure so what symptoms should you be on your guard against?

Computer is working but simply won’t boot up properly: Often this can be overcome by starting your computer in safe mode if you know how, and going from there. But this will not always help as you may be suffering from a software issue or conflict or even possible a hardware issue such as a failing hard disk drive.

Your computer loses its zing and starts to feel very jaded and slow: This could be the result of hard drive fragmentation which can be rectified, or could be a more serious operating system problem. The potential for data loss is possible in both scenarios and the most serious operating system problems are best dealt with by doing a totally clean OS install.

Virus or Malware infection: Computer viruses and other Malware applications, if not properly handled from the start, will inevitably lead to situations whereby a full reinstall is the only option to truly remove all trace of the malicious software from the system.

OK so you have been unlucky and have suffered from the worst potential problem, your system is dead and the only option left is to reinstall your operating system. So how could you have avoided data loss?

The Key, wherever possible, and where there is no hard disk drive fault requiring professional data recovery services is simple: Backup! Sounds simple enough if the drive is working fine, but not enough people do it.

External hard drives can be purchased in most computer shops now days and a quick search online for online backup will also give you a number of remote back up options

So what can you do if the worst has happened to you? One simple technique that has helped thousands of people recover data that would otherwise be at risk due to the unpredictability of the reinstall process is to use a USB caddy and hook the drive in question up to a fully working, (and fully protected) machine.

You can find more great advice on data recovery and in particular for businesses raid data recovery here.

Are You Prepared For A Hard Drive Crash?

November 14th, 2008

Its just a matter of time before you experience a hard drive problem. Are you prepared to loose your data? If your hard drive crashed right now do you have an action plan to follow?

Most people only think of backing up their data after they experience a problem. Don’t set yourself up for a data loss disaster.

Your data integrity action plan should consist of the following:

1) How often you will back up your data

2) What data you will back up

3) What back up procedure you will use

How often you back up your data can only be determined by how important you feel it is. Answer this question “If my hard drive crashed right now, I would be alright if I had the data from at least (time) ago”.

Of course you would want everything but if you could have the data from 1 month, or 6 months ago would that be sufficient? Whatever time is sufficient mark it on your calendar both a hard copy and set up a meeting on your PC to remind you.

You change your smoke detector batteries when you turn your clock back and when you turn it ahead right? Well back up your data then too.

If you don’t change your clocks then pick some holidays or special dates that happen close to the timeframe you want to back up your data so you won’t forget.

What data you back up depends on how you use your PC. Some of the key directories, if you are using Windows, are the My Documents, Favorites and Desktop directories.

Remember if you are using multiple profiles on your PC then the three directories above can be different for each profile and each one would need to be backed up. Visit Business Continuity for more information

You will also want to include your email data. Don’t forget to write down the email accounts you have. You should also write down any username and passwords so they are not lost. You should look at every directory to see if it has information that you would need.

Make a list of all the software programs you are using. If you have the physical CDs put them all together in a safe location.

Don’t forget the CDs for your peripherals like your scanner, digital camera, PDA etc… Collecting these CDs may remind you of additional data that you need to back up.

If you are running software that you installed from downloaded files, burn them to a CD-R and add it to your collection. If you use a CD-R or DVD-R you can update it as you download and install new applications.

What procedure you use to back up your data can be determined by the amount of data you want to back up. Your data might fit onto a CD or DVD in which case you just need to burn it and you’re done. Visit Business Continuity for more information

If it spans multiple DVDs then you might want to consider getting a second hard drive to copy your data onto. If you are not comfortable with adding a second internal hard drive or you are using a laptop then you can purchase an external hard drive to back up your data.

The information you have on your hard drive could disappear in a flash. If you don’t want to spend up to $3,000 to have a data recovery company retrieve what information they can from your hard drive, then take a few minutes right now and create your back up action plan.

If you ever have a data emergency your action plan will be your insurance policy. If you adhere to it, your valuable data will adhere to you! Visit Disaster Recovery

How Can I Download XBOX 360 Games? Here’s The Easy Way!

November 11th, 2008
by Tommy Paxton

Here are some different things you can do so that you know how to download games for your Xbox 360 immediately.

It’s a very common question that we receive by email – ‘How do I download Xbox 360 games?’ Let’s go over the different options you have so you know how to download games for your Xbox 360 right away.

Option #1 – XBOX 360 Downloads

This is one way and it’s probably the most used way that people download games for the Xbox 360. Unfortunately, it’s not the best way though. Many websites offer free Xbox downloads, but then they also ask you to install their software so that you can start downloading movies and games. Although this sounds like a good deal, you need to be aware of a few things before you use these websites.

First of all, and perhaps most importantly, these websites often spread viruses and spyware. This makes these games not “free” after all. You’ll get a download, yes, but you also get a lot of problems with your computer as well. These files are often not monitored by anyone, which puts you at greater risk. It’s not worth it for a “free” game. Better not to take the risk.

The second thing you need to know is that download speeds are often so slow on these sites that it takes forever to get your download. In many cases, it can take days for a download to finish, which isn’t worth it.

Worse yet, these files are also often corrupt, which means they don’t work after all. Do you really want to sit and take so long (sometimes literally days) to download a game that not only might give you a virus and/or spyware, but might also not work after all? Simply put, we recommend that you stay away from these sites.

Therefore, we recommend that you simply stay away from these sites, since they are more trouble than they’re worth and you could have your computer completely wiped out, or worse, could even be hacked into or become a victim of identity theft.

Second option: Xbox 360 game downloads

Choosing this option will get you much improved results versus the first one. You can download just about any game you want to without having to worry about viruses or spyware, slow download speeds, or corrupt files.

Xbox 360 downloads have been in demand for a long time, and a couple of business people decided that this trend was worth capitalizing on. They therefore started specialized Xbox 360 download websites. These websites will let you download music, games, movies and more right from your computer when you register as a member. It’ll cost you about $50 for a lifetime membership. You’ll be billed only once for unlimited downloads, and then you can log into the website so that you can download a new game whenever you want to.

The membership costs less than the price of most games and lets you download as many games as you want, so it’s a great option if you want to try out new games without spending a lot of money first.

In addition, these websites have an impressive selection of games and movies. Their library contains just about any game or movie you might want, and you can usually get new releases along with older games you might not find any longer in your typical brick-and-mortar store.

Obviously the companies that put together these xbox 360 download websites are hoping to make a profit, so they do what it takes to keep their customers happy. They invest money in the software to make sure the downloads are fast, the games are always up to date and that every single game you download will actually work on your system.

At the bottom of this article, we include a link that will take you to a free trial so that you can go to a couple of the most popular Xbox 360 download websites. It’ll take about 5 to 10 minutes to set up, and all the software you’ll need to use the games is included.

Considering how easy and less expensive downloading xbox 360 games is, it’s surprising that not more people are members. In reality many people just aren’t aware that this is an option.

When you begin to use Xbox 360 downloads, you’ll likely find yourself with your own large library of games and movies to choose from. It’s a much easier and cheaper way to find Xbox games whenever you want to. One little warning is that it’s very easy to become addicted, but perhaps that’s not a bad thing. Have fun!

Peace of Mind for your PC – How to backup your computer

November 11th, 2008

The majority of us know that we should be backing up our data. If you’ve never experienced a hard drive failure or complete PC crash then consider yourself lucky, and recognize that there’s never been a better moment then this one right here to get started backing up your important files, folders and multimedia data.

Before you rush out to buy a piece of software to backup your files there are a few things you need to educate yourself on.Having an idea of the files you want to backup, keeping the process easy, and doing some research on the popular products before you buy are the main items you should keep in mind.

Know what you want backed up

Before you rush out to buy an expensive piece of software to backup your system you need to know what it is you want backed up.Some of the backup programs are designed to create complete system backups, how ever this is often more then the average computer user needs.

Most of us that are just average home computer users should backup our videos, photos, and personal documents but shouldn’t worry to much about the rest. This can make things a little to high tech for someone who’s just an average joe or jane PC user.

Go for Simple not Feature Rich

Just because a backup service or program offers more features then another doesn’t make it better.Trust me when I tell you to avoid buying a service or program that is very feature rich. Get the features you need but to many features slows down the backup process, this will in turn make it difficult for you to stick to a regular backup routine.

Instead opt for a simple program, more specifically one that backups up your files all on it’s own and only requires a one time setup. Two online backup services that meet these criteria are Carbonite Backup and Mozy Backup.

Do your Homework

Before you swipe the credit card or decide on how you’re going to backup your data take a bit of time look for online backup reviews. This just confirms that the software or service you’ve chosen is every bit as good as it claims to be.

Spending just a bit of time before you buy can save you hours of time and data if you ever have to restore files. Ensure that the program backs up files properly and also is easy to restore files.

What To Look For In A Spyware Blocker

November 11th, 2008

Scanning your computer system to remove any spyware invaders that may be present is a good first step to protecting yourself from potential threats on the Internet; however, it simply is not enough. All too often, spyware components can come back just as easily after they are removed. To provide future protection for your computer system you need a thorough spyware blocker. This article is being brought to you by Network installation Cape Town

Your computer, just like your pets and kids, needs to be immunized against potential threats. Spyware blocker programs are designed to provide that very protection and immunization.

Ideally, spyware blocker programs should have a variety of protection features to ensure your computer receives more than adequate immunization. Consider this for a moment. Which would you prefer, protection from ever developing a disease or a cure after you have it and become ill? It’s not an understatement to say that just about everyone would say they would prefer to never get the disease in the first place. That’s why we all line up at the doctor’s office as kids to receive immunizations and booster shots. This article is being brought to you by Network installation Cape Town

To keep your computer from becoming ill, you need to select a spyware blocker with real time protection. This type of feature will detect a threat as soon as it attempts to attack your computer and stop it right in its tracks; thus preventing your computer from ever becoming infected.

One of the number one ways that many spyware and adware components work is by sort of hijacking your home page. In some cases, you may have to turn on your computer one day to realize that your homepage has been changed or reset without your permission and in other cases you may not realize anychange at all, yet the problem is still there. To combat this, be sure to look for a spyware blocker that will prevent your home page from being hijacked. This feature works by sort of low-jacking your home page so that it can’t be reset without your permission.

Some of the best spyware blocker programs out there actually work by containing a list of restricted sites that prevent your computer from accessing sites that have been determined to be dangerous. If lack of control has you concerned, rest assured that many programs with such features also have a manual control option that gives you a choice of whether you want to visit the site but also informs you at the same time that this site may be dangerous. How To Undelete Deleted Files

November 10th, 2008

Your first reaction if you’ve just accidentally deleted a file on your computer is probably to go to the recycle bin. Depending on where you deleted the file from, there’s a reasonable probability that your file will be showing there , waiting for you to click “restore”.

But if you didn’t delete the file in such a way that it shows in your recycle bin, what next? Is the file lost permanently? Murphy’s Law says that files deleted by accident are usually ones that you haven’t got a backup of. What a pain!

The good news is that almost always, it’s perfectly possible to get back a deleted file. Even if it’s not shown in your recycle bin. That’s because Windows just marks the space the file used as being available for re-use.

The problem is that this won’t last forever and the more “stuff” you do on your PC, the higher the chance that Windows will overwrite some or all of the lost file, which will make recovering it expensive or maybe not even possible.

So you need to stop what you’re doing on your computer. That really does mean stop, not just slow down. Including web browsing, scanning your iTunes library, whatever. The more time you take to stop, the bigger the probability Windows decide that the space previously occupied by the file is space it can use elsewhere.

If you’ve got access to another computer, use that to download a file undelete utility like this one. If you haven’t got the use of a second PC then it’s possible that you’ll be OK using your only computer (the chance increases if there is a large amount of disk space left unused) but only do this as a last resort.

Once you’ve got your copy of a program to undelete files, it’s just a matter of following the simple prompts on screen and there’s an exceptionally big probability that the software will recover the file you accidentally deleted.

You can download a file undelete program here. There’s even a free trial, you can be 100% sure it will work for you.
